Catalunya Protest Video

Eve Richer, a filmmaker and assistant in Spain, put together this short video in order to illustrate, in small part, how the Spanish economic dowturn has hit language assistants in Catalunya.

Around 100 assistants have not been paid, so many decided to protest what they believe is an extremely unfair situation.

If you are planning to participate in the program this upcoming year, I would definitely watch the video just to put a face to what's going on in Catalunya:

  1. Oh great...Catalunya was my first choice. If the problem is still going on next year, I'm hoping that the school will be generous enough to cover the pay until it gets worked out. If not, I'm extremely fortunate that my parents are generous enough to cover some of my expenses. I never wanted to do this program for the money (especially since it's not too much to begin with), but for my love and passion for the Catalan culture and language, as well as Spain in general.

I'm hoping everything works out well for everyone in the end!

  2. Sean -- they were paid last month (FINALLY), but are still trying to work out the kinks for subsequent months.

Hopefully they work it out. I'm wishing for Catalunya, too -- I hope we can get paid on time in Nov. 2012, and if not, maybe we can gripe together! ;)
